Cycling Ireland is proud to be supporting Irish Road Safety Week 2024. This Road Safety Authority (RSA) initiative aims to increase awareness and knowledge on improving all aspects of road safety in Ireland.
Cycling Ireland is committed to improving road safety for all our members, through both education and advocacy.
The Cycle Right Programme is the national standard for cycle training, which is produced and facilitated by Cycling Ireland. It provides practical skills and safety training to promote competent and confident cyclists.
Next year, the programme aims to reach students 42,000 next year. It is delivered across three stages, catering for all participants from primary school students through to adults, and is accessible for all regardless of previous cycling experience.
Cycle Right operates in collaboration with Department of Transport and RSA.
Commenting on Cycle Right and its role in the wider vision of the Department of Transport, a representative said:
“At the Department of Transport we want to encourage more people to take up cycling and to feel safe in doing so. A programme like Cycle Right has a key part to play, particularly because it includes people who may not have cycled independently before, and people who have a disability.
“Cycle Right training gives confidence and skills to children learning to cycle. The understanding of the road and good habits that they gain today will be important to us all in years to come, as we work together to reduce our carbon footprint.”
In addition to Cycle Right, Cycling Ireland delivers a number of coaching courses. The Ride Leader Course also aims to improve road safety education. It provides leaders with an introduction to cycle leading and the competencies required to lead and manage groups on the road.
Advocacy and road safety are both key focus areas for Cycling Ireland. Recently, President of Cycling Ireland, Dr Tom Daly, was appointed to the Road User Safety Forum. Set up by the Department of Transport. The forum will provide insight and advice which will assist the Department and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) with decision making on road safety.
